Doctoral Student Spotlights

Ashleigh Collins

Early Childhood Education

I chose this Doctoral Program Because:
...of three reasons: (1) The department had a wealth of accomplished professors sharing my interests in educational inequity, particularly for diverse children in urban, under-resourced areas. (2) NYU had a demonstrated commitment to linking in-class research to out-of-class application and service, and (3) The program allowed me to pursue my research interests with "real world" applications, while having financial considerations addressed.
My academic passion is:
young children and teaching
Academic or other experience that most influenced my choice of doctoral study:
Interning with Child Advocates & teaching first grade through Teach For America.
Research or scholar I most admire:
Marva Collins
Favorite course as a doctoral student:
Dr. Pedro Noguera's Seminar
One of the things I enjoy doing in New York City when I'm not being a doctoral student:
People-watching and hanging out with friends & family
My favorite place to get coffee or eat around NYU:
Professor who has influenced me the most:
Dr. Terry Karl
