Doctoral Student Travel Fund
The Doctoral Student Travel Fund provides a maximum of $500.00 for expenses associated with presenting papers at scholarly and professional conferences. Reimbursement is limited to expenses for travel, food, lodging, and conference fees. Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development doctoral students who meet the criteria outlined below are encouraged to apply for funds by filling out and returning the required application to the Office of Graduate Studies. Criteria:
- applicants must be fully matriculated doctoral students registered in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development
- the applicant's paper must be accepted for presentation at a scholarly or professional conference (attach a one-paragraph abstract of the paper and correspondence indicating the acceptance of the paper by the conference)
- the paper being presented must be related to the applicant's dissertation topic
- approval from the dissertation committee chairperson is required
- applicants may receive this award only twice as doctoral students in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Students may apply once prior to the approval of the dissertation proposal and once after the dissertation proposal has been approved.
Note: The application should be submitted no later than four weeks prior to the date of the conference. If approval for funds is granted, you will be required to submit receipts for all expenses for which reimbursement is being requested. Requests will be considered for documented expenses only and will not exceed $500.00.
Pre-Doctoral Summer Research Grant
The Office of the Associate Dean for Student Services offers the Pre-doctoral Summer Research Grant Competition as part of the Dean’s Grants for Student Research. Doctoral candidates with approved dissertation proposals are invited to apply for the grant to support data collection, writing and/or travel directly related to their dissertation work. This application should be filled out and returned to The Office of Graduate Studies with the required signatures no later than March 1, 2008. Grant amounts will be up to $1,000. Outstanding Dissertation Award
The Office of the Associate Dean for Student Services grants The Outstanding Dissertation Award to a maximum of four students each year. Nominations are accepted from the candidate's dissertation committee chairperson and must be endorsed by the entire final oral examination commission. Awards are granted based on the recommendation of the Doctoral Affairs Committee and each award includes a $1,000 prize.
The 2007-2008 award is for students whose degrees are conferred in September 2007, January 2008, or May 2008. The nomination form and supporting materials must be submitted to Nancy Hall in the Office of Graduate Studies no later than April 11, 2008.
NYUSteinhardt Doctoral Student Teaching Excellence Award
Steinhardt doctoral students who excel in teaching, and who have demonstrated evidence of teaching effectiveness, may qualify for the Doctoral Student Teaching Excellence Award. Up to three students will be awarded $1,000 and a certificate in recognition of this honor. Nominations are accepted from the student's department chair or program director. The deadline for the 2007-2008 award is April 18, 2008 and the nomination form can be downloaded here.
Leaska Dissertation Research Award & External Funding
The Mitchell Leaska Dissertation Award honors the memory of Mitchell Leaska who was Professor of English at the Steinhardt School for more than 40 years. This fund awards $5,000 non-renewable stipends to help students complete their doctoral dissertations. Awards are available to students whose dissertations and areas of specialty are teaching & learning, math, science, applied psychology, educational sociology or social studies education. The deadlines for academic year 2007-2008 are October 1, 2007 and February 1, 2008. Information on criteria and the application process is available from our Office of Research.
