Orientation for New Doctoral Students
Steinhardt's New Doctoral Student Orientation takes place at the start of each fall semester for that year’s entry class. It is an opportunity to get acquainted with some of the services offered by our School and to meet our staff. The orientation is followed by a reception for students and faculty members from across the School.
New Doctoral Student Orientation for the Fall 2008 entry class is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, August 28th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., 82 Washington Square East, Pless Hall, 3rd Floor.
Doctoral Writing Groups
The meetings listed below are to help you make connections with other doctoral students who are interested in forming writing groups.
These meetings are for Steinhardt doctoral students at all stages of doctoral degree study from the first year of course work through the final stages of dissertation writing. This includes students writing proposals and dissertations, as well as students who might be interested in forming groups to support writing for publication, presenting papers at conferences, or writing for course work.
To sign up for one of the meetings, please send an email to steinhardt.grad.office@nyu.edu or call (212) 998-5044 and let us know which of the three meeting dates below you would like to attend. Meetings will be held in Pless Hall, 3rd floor lounge.
Wednesday, November 28th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Thursday, November 29th from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Friday, November 30th from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
These initial meetings will be run by Dean Perry N. Halkitis and Nancy Hall and the groups formed after the meetings will be run by doctoral students. Peer review of your work can provide vital support during course work and as you prepare to publish articles, present at conferences, and write your proposal and dissertation.

Sessions for Doctoral Students
The sessions below were held during the 2006-2007 academic year. The 2007-2008 dates for these sessions will be posted here.
Predoctoral Fellowships and Grants -Training Session
Associate Deans Perry Halkitis and Patricia Carey will discuss funding opportunities from outside sources, as well as grants offered by Steinhardt. Recipients of grants and dissertation fellowships from outside sources (such as APA, NSF, and AAUW) will also discuss their experiences and answer your questions about the application process. A wine and cheese reception will follow this session.
Steinhardt Research Methods Courses -Information Session
Professors Marc Scott and Mitchell Stevens, along with Associate Dean Perry Halkitis will give an overview of Steinhardt’s research methods course offerings. This session is designed to help you work with your faculty advisor to identify appropriate research methods courses to enhance your skills as you prepare for and undertake your dissertation research.
Steinhardt Office of Research and Doctoral Studies IRB Training Session
Steinhardt's Office of Research holds a training session each semester for our doctoral students. The Spring 2008 training session is scheduled for Wednesday, April 2nd from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, Pless Hall, 82 Washington Square East, 3rd Floor Lounge.
These sessions provide practical and helpful information about the IRB process. The issues addressed will assist you in preparing an IRB application that adheres to the guidelines for conducting work with human subjects. Failure to adhere to the guidelines will result in lengthy delays in carrying out your proposed research, and in the worst case scenario, put your degree at risk. The importance of attending at least one of these sessions cannot be stressed enough.
Please call us at (212) 998-5044 or send an email to steinhardt.grad.office@nyu.edu to sign up for this session.
Please consult the International Review Board website for updated information on IRB requirements.
"Doctoral Connections" is a cross-school initiative designed to help doctoral students meet and network with each other and with faculty members from across the departments at Steinhardt.
