What is the difference between the Professional Master of Science (OTHR) and the Post-Professional Master of Arts (OTTH)?

The Professional program is an entry-level 69 credit program designed to train students to become Occupational Therapists. 

The Post-Professional program is a 30 credit program designed to advance the skills of current Occupational Therapists. 

I am an international student with a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy from a foreign country, am I eligible to apply to the post-professional MA (OTTH) program?

Yes, students with a bachelor’s degree in Occupational Therapy are eligible to apply to our Post-Professional MA (OTTH) program.

What is the application deadline for international students?

The deadlines for the programs are as followed:

Masters of Arts (Post-Professional- OTTH): February 1st

Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTHS): March 15th

Doctor of Philosophy (OTHX): December 1st

 

Do I need to submit TOEFL or English proficiency exam scores?

Applicants whose first language is not English are required to take one of the following English proficiency exams: TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic. See more information on English proficiency testing.

Are the GREs required?

For the MA Program: No. The GRE is not required for admission to the Post-Professional Master of Arts degree program (OTTH). 

* Students applying to the MA/OTD Single decision option are required to submit GRE scores

For the Doctoral Programs: Yes. All doctoral applicants are required to submit GRE scores. NYU Steinhardt's GRE test code is 2556.

How long is the program?

Masters of Arts (Post-Professional- OTTH): 30 units

Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTHS): 36 units

Doctor of Philosophy (OTHX): 52 units

How do I apply for the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)

If you plan to apply for OTR certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), please view the NBCOT’s website for more information: www.nbcot.org. Select the international tab then select the Occupational Therapy Eligibility Determination (OTED) handbook and the Certification Exam Handbook.

Review the document requirements and the forms to be filled out. The NBCOT may request additional coursework or materials after the initial processing of your application. You should also be aware the processing of documents can take up to six months after you apply.

After graduating from your MA program am I eligible to sit for the NBCOT exam?

“Effective July 1, 2013, internationally educated occupational therapists must meet one of the following minimum criteria to be considered eligible for the OTR® certification examination:
1.    Completion of an Entry-Level Bachelor’s  Degree in Occupational Therapy from a government authorized and/or WFOT approved college or university occupational therapy educational program AND a Post Professional Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy** OR
2.    Completion of an Entry-Level Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from a government authorized and/or WFOT approved college or university occupational therapy educational program**
**    In addition to the master’s degree requirement in occupational therapy, applicants must complete NBCOT’s Occupational Therapist Eligibility Determination (OTED) review to determine comparability to US accreditation occupational therapy educational standards/competencies” (NBCOT, 2011).

Are there any aid/scholarship available for international students?

PhD applicants- All full-time PhD students are considered for a Steinhardt Fellow position.  These fellowships are offered on a competitive basis.  No special application is required.
