Steinhardt's Music Department Debuts Contemporary Vocal Workshop

The Contemporary Vocal Workshop, a new summer workshop from the Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions that focuses on vocal technique for singing contemporary music, debuted this year.

During the two-week program, the 40 participants, whose ages ranged from 17-25, attended intimate workshops with such luminaries as actress and singer Vanessa Williams, Grammy-winning vocalist and songwriter Lisa Fischer, dance captain and original cast member of Hamilton Voltaire Wade-Greene, and Leslie Becker, award-winning Broadway actress, songwriter and recording artist.

Participants had the opportunity to hone their voices in private lessons, learn about overcoming performance anxiety, and share what they learned in a final concert.

In addition, students attended two Broadway shows (Beautiful and Waitress) and a concert by instructor Leslie Becker in the East Village.

While universities have traditionally offered voice programs in classical voice and musical theatre, few have tailored their programs to contemporary singing despite the fact that today's singers are often expected to sing in a variety of genres, including pop, jazz, and rock.
