5-Minute Student Interviews

This semester, the Performing Arts Administration Student Association sat down for a quick chat with current students about their experiences in the program and at internships, and where they hope to go in the future.

Name: Amanda Zook

Current Internship: Elevator Repair Service - (Theater, not an actual elevator)

You are a Performing Arts Administration Graduate Student at NYU Steinhardt. What is that like?
It’s challenging, exciting, and life-changing.
What is one of your favorite NYU moments so far?
Having a cup of coffee with an alumnus via the mentorship program - so informative and inspiring!
Favorite place to hang out around NYU?
Listening to music across the Village, specifically 55 Bar.
What advice would you give to someone applying to the program?
Go volunteer and get experience in the field! Read the news.
What in your opinion, is the major difference between ungrad and grad school?
Professors expect you to function at a much higher level personally and academically -- everyone in the program is so passionate!
What is something that you’ve really loved working on so far?
I love my internship.

You are a Performing Arts Administration Graduate Student at NYU Steinhardt. What is that like?
Awesome. Sometimes it’s really hard and challenging but overall it has been a once in a lifetime experience.
What is one of your favorite NYU moments so far?
Getting to know people from all over the world.
Favorite place to hang out/eat around NYU?
Bobst Library and Trophy Bar.
What advice would you give to someone applying to the program?
Start reading before you begin classes!
What in your opinion, is the major difference between ungrad and grad school?
Everything is different! I used to be a musician and my focus was playing music. Now, I’m in classes like accounting and leadership -- classes I never thought I would be in. I love it though!
What is something that you’ve really loved working on so far?
Working closely with my internship supervisor and having the chance to share my ideas. Developing strategies that support the growth of the organization I love working with!

You are a Performing Arts Administration Graduate Student at NYU Steinhardt. What is that like?
I’m fortunate to be getting such a nurturing hands-on experience. The program is fairly small so I am able to get to know my fellow students and professors on a personal level.
What is one of your favorite NYU moments so far?

I really like booking studying rooms at Bobst to work with my groups on our projects. I love that we work to collaborate, instead of compete.
Favorite place to hang out around NYU?

I’m a big fan of any vegan restaurant. Honorable mention goes to Beyond Sushi and By Chloe.
What advice would you give to someone applying to the program?

Really consider what you want from a graduate program. Once you know this, your confidence will increase and will be apparent to everyone.
What in your opinion, is the major difference between ungrad and grad school?
Grad school is a much more satisfying experience because I have chosen this career path. All of my classes are relevant and essential to my future success.
What is something that you’ve really loved working on so far?
As the Major Gifts Intern at American Ballet Theater (ABT), I enjoy having real responsibilities and making a real difference to the organization.

You are a Performing Arts Administration Graduate student at NYU Steinhardt. What is that like?
Through the program I have met many wonderful students with the same passion as me for the performing arts. The campus’s central location, in the heart of Manhattan, makes it really easy to see shows and other live performances.
What is one of your favorite NYU moments?
Many of my courses have great guest speakers; they are experienced professionals often from prestigious performing arts organizations. I learn a lot from their lectures about the ins and outs of the industry.
Favorite place to hang out/eat in NYC´╝č

Vintage stores with friends on the Lower East Side and Brooklyn. Seeing shows at experimental theatre venues.
What advice would you give to someone applying to the program?

Get a little experience in the performing arts field; it will help inform the direction of your studies.
What do you think is the major difference you’ve found between undergrad and grad school?

Graduate school is more concentrated and intensive. It is way more fun!
