Joya Powell Wins A Bessie

Joya Powell, a graduate of the Teaching Dance in the Professions track, won a 2016 Bessie Award for Outstanding Emerging Choreographer.

Powell has been described as “a radiant performer” by the New York Times. She is the founder of the Movement of the People Dance Company, whose goal is to build community and increase social awareness through choreography.

Before earning her MA in Dance Education, she graduated from Columbia University with her degree in Latin American Studies and Creative Writing.

The Bessies, or the New York Dance and Performance Awards, are the preeminent awards for the dance community. Joya accepted her award on July 13 at the David Koch Theater at Lincoln Center.
