Steinhardt Launches New Master's in TESOL with NYU Shanghai

As part of NYU Steinhardt’s commitment to global education, the Program in Multilingual/Multicultural Studies (MMS) within the Department of Teaching and Learning will launch a new MA degree program in TESOL for Chinese in-service teachers beginning in Summer 2017 at NYU Shanghai.  MMS currently offers an internationally renowned TESOL Master’s degree program in New York, and the new program will include multiple modes of delivery including online instruction and intensive onsite study in Shanghai and New York City.  The program is structured to allow K-12 in-service teachers of English in China to obtain an NYU Steinhardt degree while continuing to teach in their local schools.  The initiative will be led by a faculty program director based at NYU Shanghai and all courses will be taught by NYU faculty with extensive experience educating Chinese students.

“This program will set a new standard for innovative, technologically efficient teacher development on a global scale,” says Shondel Nero, Associate Professor of Teaching and Learning and Director of the Multilingual Multicultural Studies Program. The learning of English in China has expanded dramatically in recent years.  English is now a compulsory subject on the college admission test, the “gaokao,” and most students start studying English in elementary or middle school.  As a result, the demand for English teachers is extremely high, and the Chinese government is strongly encouraging all teachers to seek Master’s degrees in teaching English to enhance their own language proficiency and develop their pedagogical skills.

With our program’s expertise in cutting-edge English language teaching methodology, Steinhardt’s capacity to offer online courses, and the exceptional resources available at NYU Shanghai, we are uniquely positioned to address this need in China.
