NYU Shanghai Hosts Steinhardt Food Studies Conference and Alumni Art Exhibition

NYU Steinhardt’s Food Studies Program and NYU Shanghai sponsored The City Food Shanghai Workshop in April of 2016.  Krishnendu Ray, Associate Professor of Food Studies and Chair of Nutrition and Food Studies and Jennifer Berg, Clinical Associate Professor of Food Studies presented on the multisensory politics of urban food vending with colleagues from Canada, Japan, and the UK.  The event hosted at NYU Shanghai’s Pudong campus was one of a series of activities associated with The City Food Urban Lab, a collaborative research and pedagogical tool stretching across NYU Abu Dhabi, New York, Shanghai and Sydney.  The Lab provides both digital and concrete spaces for innovation, interpretation, and inactive communication amongst scholars, students, and community partners.  Additionally, it serves as a repository of audio, visual, and written material that is collected through related projects.

Gerald Pryor, Associate Professor of Art and Art Education, partnered with the NYU Shanghai Art Gallery to present REKNOWN, a group exhibition featuring the works of Professor Pryor and several of the Chinese artists who studied with him at NYU from 1986-2016.  Professor Pryor first visited China in 1989 at the invitation of the Chinese Photographer’s Association.  He has continued to engage students and artists in China’s vibrant art scene ever since.  This exhibition showcased some of the dynamic work that has emerged from these relationships, and explored the East-West exchange through film, painting, photography, and sculpture.
