Physical Therapy Partners with China Medical University in Taiwan

Dean Dominic Brewer and Associate Dean Erich Dietrich signed an agreement with Dean Wu-Chung Shen of China Medical University (CMU) in Taiwan that will allow graduates from CMU’s physical therapy professional education program to enroll in NYU Steinhardt’s Master of Arts (MA) Program in Pathokinesiology and the Doctor of Physical Therapy for Practicing Physical Therapists Program. The partnership was initiated by Wen Ling, Associate Professor of Physical Therapy, who has collaborated with physical therapy educators in Taiwan since the 1980s.

During sabbatical in the fall of 2013, Ling visited China Medical University and laid the foundation for this exciting partnership. CMU is located in Taichung, Taiwan, and was established in 1958 to prepare health professionals to utilize Chinese and western techniques in the practice of medicine. The Physical Therapy program at CMU was founded in 1990, and NYU and CMU are connected through NYU Steinhardt’s alumni network. CMU’s Physical Therapy Professors Shih-Heng Sun and Mei-Ying Kuo both graduated from the NYU Steinhardt M.A. program.

"Establishing a collaborative agreement with China Medical University gives us the opportunity to educate Taiwanese physical therapist clinicians and will ultimately improve the field in Taiwan. Additionally, faculty and students in New York will learn ways to adapt Chinese medicine to their own practice of physical therapy," said Ling.
