Paula Chakravartty Co-edits Special Issue of Television and New Media

Along with Professor Srirupa Roy, Associate Professor Paula Chakravartty has edited the May 2015 issue for the journal Television and New Media. The articles in Modi and the Media: Indian Politics and Electoral Aftermath focus on the rapid expansion of the commercial media field and the resurgence of the Hindu Nationalist BJP under the leadership of Narendra Modi. Scholars explore various dimensions of mediated populism, whose dynamics and effects while potentially widespread, have a particular resonance in postcolonial mediated democracies across the global South. A common theme is the remaking of the relationship between the state and the “people” in the aftermath of neoliberal reforms as well as the ambivalent, productive and repressive instrumentalities and effects of digital media.
