A new book by Nicole Starosielski examines the vast underwater infrastructure undergirding the world's Internet.
In The Undersea Network Nicole Starosielski follows these cables from the ocean depths to their landing zones on the beaches of the South Pacific, charting the cultural, political, historical, and environmental dimensions that are entangled in the material information system.
The release coincides with the launch of Surfacing, a digital mapping project co-authored with Erik Loyer and MCC doctoral student Shane Brennan. MCC PhD students Jessica Feldman and Anne Pasek served as Research Assistants on the project. In the interactive project, readers can trace the cable routes, view images, stories, and archival material about the island cable hubs.
