Professor Elaine Gates: GRAMMY Music Educator Semi-Finalist
Professor Elaine Gates, director of The NYU Children's Chorus and former director of undergraduate Music Education, has been nominated for a Music Educator Award from the Recording Academy and the GRAMMY Foundation.
A graduate of NYU herself, Gates received her BS in music education before earning a masters degree in elementary education at State Teachers College at New Paltz.
Gates led the NYU Steinhardt undergraduate Music Education program for 18 years before moving to her current position at LIU Post where she teaches graduate music education and supervises student teachers.
This is the first time that the Music Educator Award will be given. As one of 25 semifinalists, Gates has already made it through two rounds. There were over 30,000 initial nominations.
The winner will receive $10,000 and will be flown to Los Angeles in January to attend the 2014 Grammy Awards.
