Play With Your Music, a unique collaboration between NYU Steinhardt's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, Peer 2 Peer University, and the MIT Media Lab that brings greater access to the world of creative music production, is back for a second session.
This free, six-week online community teaches creative music production through two classic Peter Gabriel songs, “In Your Eyes,” and “Sledgehammer.” As part of the course, participants have access to video interviews with Gabriel as well as live interviews with Gabriel collaborators Jerry Marotta and Kevin Killen.
Associate Professor of Music Education and Music Technology, Dr. Alex Ruthmann is the lead designer of Play With Your Music. The first session of Play With Your Music took place in fall 2013 and attracted 5,000 students.
“This course creates a unique opportunity for anybody with a computer and an Internet connection to learn the ins and outs of creative music production through working directly with musical multitrack recordings of music legend Peter Gabriel,” Ruthmann told NYU Steinhardt’s At a Glance.
Using the latest music education tools available online, Play With Your Music teaches web-based audio production via popular songs. The program is open to anyone with a computer and an interest in working with music.
Participants begin the course by identifying, describing, and mapping the sounds and structures they hear in a song, using Google Charts and Spreadsheets. They then access Soundation’s Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) to learn the basics of mixing and sound editing.
Students can then post their tracks to SoundCloud’s listening community to receive and give feedback.
