Volunteer Opportunity for Alumni: Mind Matters, Writing and Critical Thinking Program

Mind Matters, a nonprofit organization, is looking for volunteers in the New York City area for its Writing & Critical Thinking Program. Volunteers in this program work with low-income, high achieving high school juniors who are applying to summer enrichment programs throughout the United States and around the world. These students will be applying to college in just a year, and this experience helps them hone their essay-writing skills. Also, the summer programs provide the students with unique academic experiences that help them broaden their career goals.

Volunteers work with groups of three to seven students during 45-minute sessions and by mentoring students one-on-one. During the first half of the year, the sessions and homework center on essay-writing. During the second half of the year, students will analyze short fiction stories and then write their own fiction pieces. These pieces will be complied into zines and presented to different audiences.

Volunteering entails attending sessions every Saturday from approximately 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. from October through December, and then less frequently from January through May.

Minds Matter is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to transform the lives of accomplished high school students from low-income families by broadening their dreams and preparing them for college success.
