Murray on Death and Reality Television

Susan Murray, faculty in the NYU Steinhardt Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, commented in The New York Times article on death and reality television. The article focuses on Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch" Captain Harris who died from a stroke at the age of 53.

Murray says these programs "track people engaged in dangerous tasks, and although the assumption is that all or most of those people will survive, we watch - at least in part - because there is a chance that they won't survive."

While the death of Captain Harris is attributed to cigarette addiction not to an accident on-the-job, Professor Murray recognizes that, as the family grieves, the captain's death was "a loss for the audience too."
