Marcelo and Carola Suarez-Orozco on Sotomayor Nomination

Writing in the Huffington Post, Marcelo M. and Carola Suarez-Orozco acknowledge the historic nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

Although her journey from the housing projects of the Bronx to Princeton University and Yale Law School is impressive, they write, her successes stand in stark contrast to the realities of many of today's Latino students. They call on President Obama to develop evidence-based interventions to help curb the Latino/white achievement gap.

"Judge Sotomayor's biography is all the more inspiring considering the odds she faced," they write. "After celebrating her biography and debating her ideology let us turn this moment into a reflection of the work ahead so that the more than 16 million Latina and Latino children have a fair chance to follow her path."
