Alumna Tisch Appointed Chancellor-Elect of NYS Board of Regents

Philanthropist Merryl H. Tisch, who earned a master's degree in education from the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in 1979, has been appointed the first female Chancellor-Elect of the New York State Board of Regents. Tisch, who was first appointed to the Board in 1996, will finish the remaining three years of outgoing Chancellor Robert M. Bennett's term.

In a statement announcing the appointment, Tisch remarked that under her leadership, the Board will "embrace innovation with a data-driven approach that seeks to constantly identify and advance policies and best practices to raise test scores, raise graduation rates, and finally close the achievement gap." A former elementary school teacher, Tisch serves on the executive committees of numerous non-profit organizations and institutions of higher education, in addition to currently serving on the Dean's Council of NYU Steinhardt. The New York State Board of Regents sets education policy and supervises the State Department of Education as well as the state university system.
