In Electing Obama, U.S. Sets Example for the World, Says Zimmerman

In a commentary posted on washingtonpost.com, Jonathan Zimmerman, professor of education and history,  puts the election of Barack Obama in historical context, noting that the U.S.  "just became the first majority-white democracy on this planet to anoint a black person as national leader."

Zimmerman writes that despite often being behind the "racial equality curve", the U.S., in electing Obama to the presidency, is finally ahead of it.

"So Americans should be celebrating, too, no matter whom they supported on Tuesday," he writes. "In choosing Barack Obama . . . the United States proved that it can still can serve as an exemplar for the rest of the world."
