Odin, the opera, produced by Steinhardt's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, received praise in an opera review in the April 17th issue of the New York Times.
Directed by John Simpkins, with musical direction by Jonathan Haas, Odin was conducted by the NYU Percussion Ensemble, and overseen by composer Donald Knaack. The opera was highly regarded by the New York Times for the work of undergraduate and graduate students in the department.
Excerpts from the review:
For “Odin: The Opera,” a work in progress that had its premiere in a semi-staged concert version at the Frederick Loewe Theater of New York University on Friday night, he (Knack) used another found resource: the energy and talent of the university’s mainly undergraduate vocal students and mainly graduate-student percussionists. Their raw energy coursed through the piece and helped infuse it with far more vitality than it might have manifested without them.”The appeal of the whole thing lay mainly in its youthful energy and striking instrumentation. (The N.Y.U. Percussion Ensemble, under Jonathan Haas, was impressive.)
