New York City’s Department of Education is beginning to implement a system in which city schools would receive a letter grade. With the effort, the department is seeking to enhance accountability in the school system.
However, Robert Tobias says effectively installing such a system is more difficult that it sounds.
“It’s a tricky business,” Tobias told the New York Daily News. “You’re simplifying all the data and making it more palatable and more understandable to the general public and that’s a positive. . . . But you have to make value judgments: Are you going to value standardized tests more than other indicators, like attendance? . . . Who’s going to make those decisions?”
