Classical Voice & Music Theatre Faculty: Matthew Shepard Smith

Matthew Shepard Smith is in his sixth year as an Adjunct Professor of Voice at NYUSteinhardt, Music and Performing Arts Professions.  He received his Bachelor of Music from Arizona State University and his Master of Music from Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music.  Matthew’s performing career has spanned almost two decades in the New York area.  Recently, he played Ralph Sheldrake in the Detroit company of WHITE CHRISTMAS, and he was part of the Kathleen Marshall and Dick Scanlon workshop revival of THE UNSINKABLE MOLLY BROWN in Denver and New York City.  Matthew’s Broadway credits include, the title characters in both BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL, and Bob Baker in WONDERFUL TOWN opposite Donna Murphy and Brooke Shields, respectively.   He has played Enjolras in the National Tour of LES MISERABLES, and the title character in the European premiere tour of the Maury Yeston/Arthur Kopit DAS PHANTOM.  Off Broadway, Matthew starred as Dr. Peterson in the Off Broadway musical, SESSIONS, at the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre on 42nd Street.  He also reprised is role, Jim Keenan, in Phil Hall’s play with music, MATTHEW PASSION, at St. John the Devine, in New York City.  Other New York credits include Bert, the cop, in The Actor’s Fund presentation of A WONDERFUL LIFE, starring Brian Stokes Mitchell; the concert version of SOUTH PACIFIC at Carnegie Hall starring Reba McIntire and Brian Stokes Mitchell aired on PBS; and the Roundabout’s workshop presentation of 110 IN THE SHADE starring Audra McDonald and Hal Holbrook. 

Regionally, he appeared in the highly successful SONDHEIM CELEBRATION at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, as The Soldier/Alex in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE starring Raul Esparza.  He played the title character in the world premiere presentation of the Leslie Eberhard, David Levy, and Phil Hall version of JEKYLL AND HYDE in Ohio, as well as the title character in the world premiere of Grant Robbin’s GAUGUIN, THE MUSICAL in Chicago.   Other regional credits include: Javert in Music Theatre of Wichita’s highly successful production of LES MISERABLES, Duke/Dr. Carrasco in MAN OF LA MANCHA, Peter in COMPANY, Gaston Lachaille in GIGI, Crosby in SWINGING ON A STAR, The Narrator in BLOOD BROTHERS, Baron von Gaigern in GRAND HOTEL, Mike Bailey in SAYONARA and Jim Dillingham in GIFTS OF THE MAGI.  He has also been seen numerous times on THE GUIDING LIGHT on CBS.  Matthew has soloed with many orchestras throughout the USA, Canada and Europe. He is an active participant in the development of numerous new works at their most infant stages in New York City, in readings and workshops. Matthew lives in Maplewood, NJ with his wife, Elizabeth Mills Smith, and daughter, Madeleine Grace.
