Panayotis Mavromatis, Director of Music Theory

Dr. Panayotis Mavromatis received his B.A. and M.A. in mathematics from Cambridge University in England, his M.A. in physics from Boston University, and his Ph.D. in music theory from the Eastman School of Music. His research integrates cognitive science, linguistics and computer science into traditional music disciplines. In his dissertation research, he developed a computer model of melody in modern Greek church chant and explored its cognitive implications. Professor Mavromatis's publications include: the entry 'Set Theory' for the Harvard Dictionary of Music (4th ed.); "A Hidden Markov Model of Melody in Greek Church Chant" in Computing in Musicology, Fall 2005; and numerous contributions to professional conference proceedings. Professor Mavromatis was the 2005 recipient of the W. Gabriel Carras Research Award from NYU Steinhardt.

Dr. Mavromatis' current research focuses on computer modeling of musical skill and its acquisition. His work on an Intelligent Tutoring System for species counterpoint explores the applications of Artificial Intelligence in education.
