NEW YORK UNIVERSITY SUMMER STUDY IN MUSIC THEATRE

Program dates: June 30-July 17, 2008

The Vocal Performance Program in Music and Performing Arts Professions offers a three-week intensive workshop during which students explore the techniques of music theatre performance from the perspective of an actor, singer, and dancer. The workshop employs both group and individual instruction, and activities include dance classes, choreography and musical staging rehearsals, acting and song analysis classes, private song coachings, and a series of master classes on subjects related to the field. Private voice lessons with one of our master teachers – as a supplement to the course work – are also available. The workshop culminates with a showcase presentation in which students perform the material they have been working on in class. The Summer 2008 Showcase will be presented on Thursday evening, July 17 in the Eisner-Luben Auditoriuim at NYU's Kimmel Center for Student Life. Students will move out of the residence hall on Friday, July 18.

In addition to students already enrolled at NYU, the workshop is open to students from other universities and those who have just graduated from high school or completed their junior year. You must be at least 16-years-old to participate in the workshop.
If you would like to be considered for the workshop you must submit the following:
• a letter of intent explaining why you are interested in taking the workshop
a general summer application
• a résumé of your educational and performance background
• a recent photograph
• a video tape (VHS format only) or DVD of you singing two contrasting songs
Please be sure to include your phone number, your mailing address, and your e-mail address as well as the name of your school and your year of study (i.e., high school senior, college junior).

Workshop Information 2008:

The application deadline is April 1, and you will be notified by May 1. If you are accepted for the workshop you will receive instructions about how to proceed with the registration process through the University. Applications accepted after the deadline on a space available  basis.

Dates/Times: The workshop will begin on Monday morning, June 30 at 10:00 AM and will end on Thursday evening, July 17. For visiting students there will be an orientation session on Sunday evening prior to the workshop beginning. In order to participate in the workshop you must be available Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM including Friday, July 4.

Registration: High school students – either rising seniors or those who have just graduated – take the workshop for non-credit.

Currently enrolled NYU students and visiting students from other universities have the option of taking the workshop for non-credit or credit. The workshop is offered for 3 credits – E85.1065 and is also available at the graduate level – E85.2068. These credits can be transferred to another university and would apply to a degree at NYU should you be accepted into one of the University’s degree programs. If you would like to take the course for credit you should request the Summer Bulletin at:

http://inquiry.embark.com/nyu/summer/default.asp?referral=A32

Non-Credit: The cost for taking the workshop non-credit is $2250.

NYU Students: If you are already enrolled at NYU in a degree program you can register for this course directly with Professor Wesbrooks – www2@nyu.edu.

Housing:
Students stay in shared rooms in an NYU residence hall with one or two roommates. The residence hall is located near Washington Square Park, a short walk from campus buildings. The housing and meals cost includes a meal plan of 10 meals per week and a card with $25 declining dollars. Participants can eat meals in campus dining halls, Monday-Friday. Students should bring long (80 inch) twin bed size flat and fitted sheets, blankets, bedspreads, pillows, and their own towels. The residence hall building has air conditioning and Internet access with an Ethernet cable. Students staying in NYU housing should move in on June 29 and attend a required orientation session that evening. They must move out on Friday, July 18. The total cost of housing and meals is $990. For students taking the program for credit, the total cost of housing and meals is $795.

NYU Public Safety Services officers are on duty 24 hours a day. Specially assigned Resident Assistants (R.A.) monitor discipline, including enforcing a curfew for students in this program, and help students as they adjust to living away from home.

Because our standards for achievement are high, we accept highly motivated students who will enjoy the classes as well as the cultural activities. It is, therefore, important to know that failure to comply with regulations will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program. Parents and/or guardians will be contacted as soon as any unsatisfactory behavior is recognized.

Private Lessons:
In conjunction with the workshop we offer private voice lessons with one of our master teachers. Our voice faculty is made up of professional singers who maintain private teaching studios while they pursue their performance careers. You are able to take voice lessons for either credit or non-credit. However, the non-credit option is recommended, and we suggest that each student register for 3 lessons. The fee for non-credit private voice lessons is $100 per one-hour lesson.

Credit:
Private voice lessons are offered for either 2 or 4 credits. 2 credits translate into 7 one-hour lessons, and 4 credits translate into 14 one-hour lessons. If you are taking private lessons for credit you must extend your stay in New York so that the lessons can be spaced out over a longer period of time.

If you have any questions please contact Professor Wesbrooks at www2@nyu.edu.

***PLEASE NOTE: Participants under the age of 18 will be required to attend activities on practically every evening during the program. Activities will include trips to the theatre, concerts and visits to important sites throughout New York City.***
