New York University’s Program in Vocal Performance premiered the musical The Light in the Piazza, based on the novella by Elizabeth Spencer, the book by Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize nominee Craig Lucas, and the music and lyrics by Tony Award winner Adam Guettel.
The Light in the Piazza tells the story of Clara Johnson and her mother, Margaret, in the summer of 1953. While on vacation in Florence, Clara falls in love with a young Italian man named Fabrizio. She has to fight her mother’s opposition to their marriage for reasons that are revealed slowly throughout the course of the show.
