Guest speaker: Joan La Barbara
Title: Sonic Atmospheres
Composer/performer Joan La Barbara will discuss her compositional process including how she builds the sonic atmospheres which form the foundation of many of her recent works.
Bio: Joan La Barbara, composer, performer, sound artist and actor is renowned for developing a unique vocabulary of experimental and extended vocal techniques (multiphonics, circular singing, ululation, and glottal clicks, her “signature sounds”) influencing generations of other composers and singers. La Barbara serves on the composition faculty at New York University. She is composing a new opera exploring the artistic process, interior dialogue, and sounds within the mind. The Society of Women In TeCHnology (SWITCH) is a student run club for women technology students at NYU, both graduate and undergraduate. SWITCH empowers women to succeed in technology related fields, be it academic or professional, with an emphasis on music technology and the industry and arts professions.
