Summer Music Theatre Workshop

Our Summer Workshop will not be held this summer as we are updating the program and will reintroduce it in Summer 2025. Thank you.

During these two weeks of instruction, you will have the chance to explore the techniques of music theatre performance from the perspective of an actor, singer, and dancer. The workshop consists of one-on-one instruction (voice lessons and coachings), as well as group instruction in dance, acting and song analysis. A series of guest artists will join us and provide various workshops as well as masterclasses in addition to lectures on specific topics related to voice science and the performing arts business.

You will have the opportunity to share the work done throughout the two weeks with your instructors  of the various performance tasks related to each course and workshop and receive feedback from the instructors. The workshop will culminate with a final showcase where you will perform the material you have been working on during your voice lessons and classes.

The workshop will be conducted generally Monday through Friday from 10-6pm, with a lunch break from 1:10-2:20pm. Voice lessons will take place in the morning and you will alternate between a morning time when you will be in lesson or taking songwriting classes, and other days when you will have an hour-and-a-half-long block of time to work on the projects for the workshop.

Audition Requirements

Submit three video clips consisting of the following material:
Introduction: Please say your name clearly, the date, the city you are from, and the pieces that you are going to perform. Two songs: Your two selections should be complete and contrasting songs – each no longer than four minutes. Choose material from music theatre repertoire – but please avoid rock, pop, country, and jazz. Your video should count with the collaboration of a live musician (pianist, guitarist, etc.). However, due to the current circumstances, applicants who do not have a video submission of their song selections pre-recorded with a live pianist may submit recordings using tracks.

In addition to the above videos, please submit a resume: Your resume should reflect your theatre performance experience. Think “theatre resume” rather than “academic resume” for this. Headshot or recent photograph: Again we are not looking for a professional quality photograph. If you have a headshot, that is fine. If not, a recent snapshot will suffice.

Rather than a single long video, we would like three separate clips: the introduction, the first song, and the second song. It’s easier for us to review and easier for you to shoot. We will not be influenced by the professional quality of the video. Please do not worry about any elaborate lighting or studio conditions.

Please make sure your voice can be heard above the accompaniment – try different distances from the sound source until you find the right “balance” between piano and voice.

After uploading the pre-screening submission, you will immediately be notified that we have received your materials. After those materials have been reviewed you will be contacted with more information.
