Summer Courses

Scoring for Film and Multimedia, E85.2048 (May 15-June 24, 2006) is a graduate production course for composers and filmmakers. Seniors with 92 points are also eligible to enroll. The creative and technical processes of composing music for film and multimedia are enhanced through the application of software utilizing both electronic and traditional instruments. Aspects of music editing will also be integrated. Film scoring faculty members Ira Newborn and Mike Patterson conduct sessions within this seminar. Industry guests are also featured on a regular basis: Gillian B. Anderson, David Spear, and Paul Chihara.

The course runs the gamut of music production while maintaining an active dialogue between composers and directors in the Fall and Spring semesters. The course emulates the process of professional music production: spotting the film - developing and timing the cues - producing MIDI mock-ups - orchestration - live recording sessions - mixing and sweetening live tracks. Software includes ProTools, Digital Performer, Logic Audio, and sample libraries from Miroslav Vitous and Vienna Strings. Hardware includes Neumann Microphones and an SSL board in Studio "A".  Fall and Spring semesters feature the live recording of live ensembles within the seminar. The Steinhardt Symphony Orchestra features composer readings and film scores.

For the summer session of this course, students enrolled in this class will automatically audit the "NYU/ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop, in memory of Buddy Baker," at no additional charge (May 17-June 26). During these workshops, ASCAP will host a roundtable featuring the business aspects of Composing Music for Film, and a presentation of a major film composer in an expose of his/her works. Past guests have included composer David Raksin (Laura), Marco Beltrami (Scream, Temrinator 3), orchestrator Sonny Kompanek (The General's Daughter, The Heist), and Elliott Goldenthal (Interview WIth The Vampire).
