SUMMER 2024 UPDATE

Steinhardt's Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions is taking the summer off! Our acclaimed Summer Programs and Workshops will not be offered in 2024 as we plan for more compelling and varied offerings in 2025 and beyond. Please sign up now to receive information about Summer 2025 as soon as it is available. Thank you.

SUMMER 2025

The Vocal Performance Program offers a two-week intensive in which students explore and engage in classical vocal performance from multiple perspectives. In a world of ever-changing parameters, the arts remain one of our greatest comforts, vehicles of expression, and peace of mind for both individuals and the community. At no other time has this been more apparent, and so then, is the need to elevate our capacity to learn and to express ourselves through the arts. We invite you to participate in our summer workshop with our renowned faculty; experience private lessons and small group classes in Vocal Technique, Lyric Diction, Repertoire, Interpretation, and how to put all these things together in song. Experience masterclasses in auditioning, music theatre, vocal physiology, career decisions, using technology, and exploring the rich history of the singers that paved the way. Take a live or virtual tour of the Met and Opera Houses Europe and celebrate your time with us by performing in the concert on the last day - open to all via technology. Don't miss out on this opportunity - we are looking forward to your application.

Audition Requirements

Submit three video clips consisting of the following material:

Introduction: Please say your name clearly, the date, the city you are from, and the pieces that you are going to perform. Two songs: Your two selections should be complete and contrasting songs. Each selection should be no longer than four minutes. One of your songs must be in English and the other in a foreign language – Italian, German, French, or Spanish. Live or recorded piano must accompany you (no a capella singing). In addition to the above videos, please submit the following:

Resume: Your resume should reflect your experience as a performing artist and may include experience and training in solo voice, choral, theater, musical instruments and dance. Please include foreign language study and any special skills that you would like to share with us. Headshot or recent photograph: Again we are not looking for a professional quality photograph. If you have a headshot, that is fine. If not, a recent snapshot will suffice.

Rather than a single long video, we would like three separate clips: the introduction, the first song, and the second song. It’s easier for us to review and easier for you to shoot. We will not be influenced by the professional quality of the video. Please do not worry about any elaborate lighting or studio conditions. Please make sure your voice can be heard above the accompaniment – try different distances from the sound source until you find the right “balance” between piano and voice.
