Alex Wong is a second year undergraduate violist studying under the direction of Professor Stephanie Baer. Born and raised in San Diego, CA, he began playing the violin at the age of 8 and switched to viola six years later, under the direction of Professor Alyze Dreiling of the University of San Diego. During his high school career he was heavily involved with multiple music organizations throughout Southern California. Most of his time was spent with the San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (2007–2011) and the San Diego Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (2009–2011). He was assistant principal viola with the Symphony for three seasons (2009–2011) and principal viola for the Philharmonic (2009–2011). He has also held principal chairs with the University of San Diego Symphony Orchestra and the Greater San Diego Community Orchestra. He has had the honor of performing multiple concerts with the San Diego Symphony, collaborating with artists such as Jahja Ling and Cho-Liang Lin, and giving concerts at various venues throughout California, New York, and Europe.
Past festivals include the La Jolla Music SummerFest (2010–2011), Rotary International Youth Symphony (2009–2011), NYU String Quartet Workshop (2009), University of San Diego Chamber Music Festival (2007– 2010), and most recently the Strings Master Workshop held in Dobrichovice, Czech Republic (2012).
