NYU Steinhardt sophomore Joseph Brock, classical double bass, is a student of Professor Joseph Bongiorno. He began playing bass in elementary school and in 2000 became a student of David Mazanec, formerly the principal bassist of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.
Joseph attended the Alabama School of Fine Arts (ASFA) graduating in 2011. During his high school years, he held the principal positions in ASFA's Symphony Orchestra, String Orchestra, and enjoyed being a member of the top jazz bands. He also became a member of the National Honor Society.
Special awards include winning the 2010-2011 Lois Pickard Concerto Competition, as well as a solo with the Alabama Symphony Youth Orchestra, where he was also principal bass. He has had the opportunity to play in the Alabama Symphony and has taken classical master classes with world-renowned soloists and leading educators.
Joseph has a passion for jazz that has allowed him to win competitions. He is a student protégé of the jazz legend Cleve Eaton. He has gained a great deal from master classes with jazz greats including Ron Blake, Carl Allen, Ben Wolfe, Esperanza Spalding, and T.S. Monk.
Joseph’s love of music and strong passion to continue his academic endeavors has led him to NYU to challenge himself in both areas. He has had a fantastic journey so far and looks forward to the future with anticipation and excitement.
