The Intensive Three-Week String Quartet Workshop for High School and College Students. Read course credit and housing information at the bottom of this page.

Intensive String Quartet June 30 - July 19, 2008. Application deadline: March 15. Applications accepted after the deadline on a space available basis.

This unique program in the art of String Quartet playing is offered to advanced high school and college students 15 years or older and young professionals. Through intensive preparation students will engage in an in-depth study of selected string quartet repertoire. Each group will learn an entire quartet and perform it during the NYU String Quartet Festival which is held at the end of the program. Students can take the chamber music workshop for undergraduate college credit.

Master classes with well-known musicians will enrich the students’ understanding of solo and string quartet repertory. Previous master classes have been given by Nadja Salerno- Sonnenberg, Pamela Frank, Martha Strongin Katz, Lawrence Dutton, David Geber and Paul Katz , the Borromeo String Quartet and the Brentano String Quartet as well as other well-known performers.

Ample opportunity for individual practice and string quartet rehearsal are included in the daily schedule. Students will receive coaching and weekly private lessons from NYU Artist faculty Anton Miller, Stephanie Baer, and Marion Feldman as well as guest faculty Rita Porfiris, and Andrzej Grabiec. The seminar will culminate in a five-day string quartet festival held in the Frederick Loewe Theatre which will include a concert given by the Borromeo String Quartet, faculty and student performances which are open to the public.

The Borromeo String Quartet is our resident quartet in 2008. As well as performing, the quartet will give master classes.

The first week of the workshop will focus itself on solo repertoire as well as chamber music. Daily master classes will be held to enable students to acquire experience in performance and to work on their technique. The final two weeks of the Intensive String Quartet Workshop are devoted to string quartet rehearsal and performance. At the end of the second week, students perform in a “works in progress” concert.

A typical day includes four hours of scheduled quartet rehearsal, a coaching (there are three quartet coachings per week), two or more hours of individual practice and a late afternoon master class. Evenings have activities as varied as chamber music readings, NY Philharmonic concerts, operas in Central Park or pizza parties.

Registration: Once you have been approved to take the workshop you have the choice of enrolling for either credit or non-credit.

Credit for Non-NYU Students: The workshop is offered for 2 credits, E85.1080.01 and 02. These credits can be transferred to another University and would apply to a degree at NYU should you be accepted into one of the University’s degree programs. If you would like to take the course for credit you should request the Summer Bulletin at:

Housing/Meals

Students stay in shared rooms in an NYU residence hall with one or two roommates. The residence hall is located near Washington Square Park, a short walk from campus buildings. The housing and meals cost includes a meal plan of 10 meals per week and a card with $25 declining dollars. Participants can eat meals in campus dining halls, Monday-Friday. Students should bring long (80 inch) twin bed size flat and fitted sheets, blankets, bedspreads, pillows, and their own towels. The residence hall building has air conditioning and Internet access with an Ethernet cable. Students staying in NYU housing should move in on June 29 and attend a required orientation session that evening. The total cost of housing and meals is $990. For students taking the program for credit, the total cost of housing and meals is $795.

NYU Public Safety Services officers are on duty 24 hours a day. Specially assigned Resident Assistants (R.A.) monitor discipline, including enforcing a curfew for students in this program, and help students as they adjust to living away from home.

Because our standards for achievement are high, we accept highly motivated students who will enjoy the classes as well as the cultural activities. It is, therefore, important to know that failure to comply with regulations will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program. Parents and/or guardians will be contacted as soon as any unsatisfactory behavior is recognized.

The cost of the program is $1,800 for students who do not receive credit. The fee for housing and meals is $990. For students taking the program for credit, the total cost of housing and meals is $795.
