New York University was the first institution to offer a Ph.D. in Music Performance. Drawing established performing artists with strong scholarly interests from around the world, Steinhardt’s doctoral program is internationally regarded for its excellence and commitment to pioneering approaches to the repertoire. Doctoral candidates not only perform at the highest level but also participate in groundbreaking research (in related areas such as genre analysis, aesthetics, acoustics, music perception and cognition, and performance practice) as it pertains to their specializations and interests. Upon leaving Steinhardt, these students are uniquely equipped for careers in both the concert hall and the academy.
