Piano Studies at NYU revolves around a close community of pianists: the Artist Faculty, which includes notable artists including Seymour Bernstein, Martin Canin, Anthony DeMare, Fabio Gardenal, Eduardus Halim, Jose Mendez, Deirdre O'Donohue and Miyoko Lotto, among others, and their undergraduate and graduate students. Coursework involves private solo lessons and chamber music coachings, as well as seminars in Piano Literature and participation in the Annual Masterclass Series, featuring NYUSteinhardt Faculty alongside internationally renowned visiting artists.
At the undergraduate level, the curriculum reserves up to 24 points for "guided electives" during the four years of study. This freedom allows students at both undergraduate and graduate levels to explore the department's diverse musical offerings and their own unique interests. Department course offerings include extensive courses in Music Technology, Composition, Music Education, and Music Business including internships with Management Companies and Concert Halls. Graduate students may also enroll in courses drawn from programs in Arts Administration and Music Therapy.
Performance opportunities range from casual Salon Evenings, in which students play for one another in an informal atmosphere, to chamber music concerts, interstudio showcases, special events, and degree recitals. Although the department prides itself on its sense of community and fellowship, each semester features a competition among the students, with prizes including performances with the NYU Orchestra and on the annual Tutte Le Corde concert.
In this first decade of the twenty-first century, the role of the pianist is far different from its role even twenty-five years ago. Our goal at NYUSteinhardt Piano Studies is to help gifted performers ultimately find artistic fulfillment, personal gratification, and professional success.
