Percussion Studies

Welcome to Percussion Studies

Studies in percussion performance at NYU provide aspiring students advanced performance training combined with the finest related academic and music courses. The B.M. and M.M. programs in music performance attract accomplished musicians interested in intensive training for careers in music performance. In addition to traditional studies in music theory and history, percussion students:

  • study with renowned faculty through private lessons
  • participate in ensembles and chamber music, symphony and repertory orchestras, and percussion ensemble
  • prepare for solo recital performances
  • attend master classes with New York City's leading percussion players

The Ph.D. in music performance is designed for successful performing artists who wish to develop an area of specialization through music research in preparation for university teaching and scholarly publication.

The Department of Music and Performing Arts offers a warm, collegial atmosphere where percussion performers enjoy the support of all faculty and their peers. Our reputation, faculty, and location provide students with a unique opportunity to develop as performers and to make the contacts necessary to launch a professional career.

The overall goal of the NYU Percussion Studies program is to provide a rewarding and fulfilling musical experience while simultaneously preparing each student to be a serious competitor in the multi-faceted music industry. The percussion studio operates in an atmosphere of cooperation and shared responsibility. Its members cultivate a spirit of mutual respect: a vital ingredient for organized, prepared, and professional training and performance. Ultimately, our goal is to serve music at the highest standard.
