Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy: Foundations, Improvisational Resources and Clinical Applications
July 13-16, 2009
This four-day Specialty CMTE course will cover 1) historical and philosophical foundations of the Nordoff-Robbins approach, 2) musical resources & techniques for improvising, playing and composing, 3) clinical application with a range of clients, and 4) supervisory feedback on participants’ current work. Areas of the CBMT Scope of Practice addressed: principles and practices of the Nordoff-Robbins Model of Music Therapy (III.A.2.a-d.); improvisation as an investigative tool in assessment and as the primary mode of treatment (I.B.4; II.A.1. 3. a-d; B.1-5.); incorporating clients’ moment-to-moment responses—instrumental, vocal, physical, verbal and/or emotional—in goal-directed improvisation (I.B.4, 6; II.E.8; III.A.1.g.1-10; III. A. 3.a); understanding clinical functions of various elements of music (I.A.1-3, B.1-10; II.E.4.a & b; III.A.3.g-j).
Prerequisites
Participants will have equivalent of two years full time professional music therapy experience. The level of instruction presupposes the ability to accompany oneself while singing; play scales and chord progressions in a variety of keys; basic knowledge of chord structure & harmony; approx. five years of experience on one harmonic instrument, preferably piano or guitar. Improvisation skills not required!

Activity Schedule and Format
Course will take place Monday - Thursday, 9:30–4:30, with two hours of breaks each day. Format includes lectures, clinical illustrations on DVD/videotape, experiential workshops, music making, and supervision of participants’ clinical work. Each day we will divide into small groups for individualized skill acquisition and feedback by instructors. Classes are limited to 16 people.

Cancellation and Refund Policy
Enrollment is limited; if insufficient, the course will be canceled and all fees refunded. Your place in the course will be guaranteed if we receive payment in full by May 1, 2009. A 50% refund will be given for cancellations requested up until 30 days prior to the start date. No refunds will be given after 30 days prior to July 13 start date. Registered participants who cannot attend may send a substitute with prior notification.

Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy: Foundations, Improvisational Resources and Clinical Applications is approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 24 Specialty Continuing Music Therapy Education credits. Credits awarded by CBMT are accepted by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). The Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy, #P-043, maintains responsibility for program quality and adherence to CBMT policies and criteria.
