Program Overview
“When students attend David Liebman’s Workshop each summer, they come seeking everything that he offers. His knowledge is immense, as is his experience as a player in the fraternity of the highest order. Music is the breath of his life…. in fact, breathing is a big subject. Dave examines how the lips, lung and the tongue all create different tonalities. Tones are the colors of inflections, the subplot of the tune; they give density and suggest mystery. Dave is a street talking Zen-master.” - Larry Fink (Photographer)
Since 1987 David Liebman has annually conducting summer saxophone master classes. As this year is Liebman’s 25th anniversary, he has chosen to present his workshop at NYU Steinhardt in celebration of his lifelong dedication to the study of saxophone and improvisation. Historically, Liebman spent much of his early years on the streets of Greenwich Village listening to Coltrane at the Village Vanguard, playing in little clubs like Boomers, getting his music together. We will accept a select group of saxophonists to work with Lieb for a week focused on his music philosophy.
Course of Study
Topics will include an in depth look at the principles of saxophone sound production as described in his well-known book and DVD on the subject. Other topics will include transcription study, developing advanced rhythmic and chromatic approaches, as well as a look and listen to “underground” videos and tapes of Coltrane, Miles Davis and Saxophone Summit. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to be critiqued on their compositions by an all-star rhythm section culminating in a final performance in Greenwich Village. One of the highlights will be a guest speaker to be chosen as the date approaches. Past speakers have included: Phil Woods, George Garzone, Joe Lovano, Michael Brecker, Bill Evans, Steve Coleman, etc. The workshops is scheduled from 10am-5pm Monday through Friday.
Housing/Meals
Housing at an NYU residence hall is available. Rooms are shared. The residence hall is located near Washington Square Park, a short walk from campus buildings. The housing and meals cost includes a meal plan of 10 meals per week and a card with $25 declining dollars. Participants can eat meals in campus dining halls, Monday-Friday. Linens are provided; Students should bring their own towels. The residence hall building has air conditioning and Internet access with an Ethernet cable.
NYU Public Safety Services officers are on duty 24 hours a day. Because our standards for achievement are high, we accept highly motivated students who will enjoy the classes as well as the cultural activities. It is, therefore, important to know that failure to comply with regulations will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program. Parents and/or guardians will be contacted as soon as any unsatisfactory behavior is recognized. Click here for more specific housing information.
Cost
The program fee is $850 plus a $50 application fee. Housing and meal plans are not included in the program fee (listed above). Airfare is not included in the program fee. Participants are responsible for arranging and purchasing their own airfare and transportation to NYU’s Greenwich Village campus.
