Q: Are there many performance opportunities for students?

A. Due to our location in the center of Greenwich Village, students have the opportunity to perform at a wide variety of local clubs and bistros. Jazz studies is grounded in performance. This is what we are all about. View upcoming events here.

Q: Can I major in jazz and minor in another area?

A. Yes, you can choose from a variety of minor topics including: Political Science, Economics, Journalism, etc. You cannot however minor in another music program.

Q: How many jazz ensembles do you have?

A. We currently have 40 jazz ensembles open to all NYU students by audition. Ensembles include: the NYU Jazz Orchestra, the NYU Jazz Repertoire Orchestra, the NYU Samba Marching Band, the NYU World Percussion Ensemble, and a wide variety of small group ensembles directed by our world-renowned jazz faculty.

Q: How much interaction do students have with the jazz community?

A. Besides weekly interaction with our world-renowned artist/faculty, we offer weekly master classes with legendary jazz artists. Streaming video can be viewed on our website. Past master classes have included Hank Jones, Cecil Taylor, Clark Terry, Joe Lovano, Jimmy Cobb, Dave Holland and more.
