David J. Elliott

Full Professor of Music and Music Education


Prior to joining NYU in 2002, Dr. Elliott was Professor of Music Education at the University of Toronto for twenty-eight years. During his tenure at the U of Toronto, he served as a visiting professor of music education at Northwestern University, Indiana University, the University of North Texas, and the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Currently, he is visiting professor of music education at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance and the Central Conservatory of Music (China).

He is co-author (with Marissa Silverman) of Music Matters: A Philosophy of Music Education, 2nd edition (Oxford University Press, 2014), editor of Praxial Music Education (OUP, 2005/2009), co-editor of Community Music Today, and author of numerous journal articles and invited book chapters, including recent chapters in The Oxford Handbook of Philosophy in Music Education; The Oxford Handbook of Music Education; and Music, Health, and Wellbeing.

Dr. Elliott has given more than 300 invited lectures at university music schools in 45 countries, including: Queens University (Belfast), University of Stockholm, Örebro University, Sibelius Academy of Music, University of Jyvaskyla, University of Oulu, Rotterdam Conservatory of Music, University of Porto, Hong Kong Chinese University, Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing), University of Sydney, University of Auckland, University of Wellington, University of Cape Town, University of Durban-Natal, University of Stellenbosch, Northwest University (South Africa), Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, University of Freiberg, University of Southern California, UCLA, University of Minnesota, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, Arizona State University, Temple University, University of Illinois-Urbana, University of Texas (Austin), Eastman School of Music, The Hartt School of Music, Ithaca College, and the University of British Columbia.

Also, he has given international and national conference keynote papers in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Israel, Malaysia, Estonia, Turkey, Denmark, The Netherlands, and many other countries.

Dr. Elliott is also an award-winning jazz composer/arranger and a professional jazz trombonist.
