Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions

Music Education Student Teaching

Undergraduate and preservice graduate students work closely with an advisor to select the best possible settings for student-teaching experiences in the New York City area.

At the secondary level, placements range from comprehensive public high schools such as Brooklyn Tech and Seward Park to schools specializing in the arts such as LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts.

At the elementary and middle-school levels, students practice their teaching at culturally diverse settings that include public community schools, music settlement houses, and independent schools.

Nancy and Ira Shankman conduct the Student Teaching Seminar for undergraduate and graduate students.

Professor Ira Shankman is the Field Placement Officer for the Department. He works with the students in making sure the best opportunities are provided for our students.
