The mission of NYU’s Music Education Program is to prepare exceptionally able and knowledgeable artist-teachers for careers in school, community and private settings.
Our large corps of outstanding professors, instructors and supervising teachers is dedicated to facilitating students’ personal and professional growth. We seek to prepare astute, effective, ethical, savvy, compassionate, articulate and creative music educators.
To accomplish our mission, our curriculum provides a rich range of formal and informal learning opportunities that take full advantage of our unique “locations”: (a) in New York City – the cultural capital of the world; (b) in a Music Department of exceptional artistic and intellectual diversity which, in turn, is located (c) in a top-ranked research university.
The Department of Music and Performing Arts offers a warm and collegial atmosphere. Students attend Masterclasses with today's leading performers and teachers in New York City. Our reputation, faculty, and location provide students with a unique opportunity to develop as artist-teachers and to make the contacts necessary to enter the teaching profession.
Music education students study with outstanding performance faculty and perform in ensembles that prepare them in repertoire that includes traditional classical to modern to the most cutting-edge electronic new music styles while also encompassing popular styles.
