EDTA: M.A. in Educational Theatre with Teacher Certification in Theatre, All Grades

The goal of Certification in Theatre, all grades, is to provide opportunities for students to explore ideas and concepts using drama strategies and theatre forms in the classroom and on stage. The graduate curriculum in Educational Theatre provides integrated course offerings in drama, dramatic literature and theatre, which are tied to the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts. This integrated course of study enables graduates to be educated as teaching artists and professionally certified as teachers of theatre, all grades.

Graduates of our Program are teachers of drama and theatre at preschools, elementary, middle and secondary schools. They hold positions in education departments in regional theatres, museums and art galleries. They are directors of drama and theatre for community centers, camp and recreation programs and religious organizations. The richness and diversity of course offerings in the Program results from the development of the Educational Theatre program in 1965. Its continued growth since then reflects the recognition and expansion of this area nationally and internationally. This new program represents the realization of the Program in Educational Theatre’s primary mission: the education of the teacher to be an artist, and the artist to be a teacher.

The need for modes of artistic expression that lead toward literate engagements with texts has never been greater than it is today. We are addressing this need by providing opportunities for students to explore ideas and concepts in the novels and plays they read through drama and theatre strategies. The new curriculum is designed to train professional teachers of English who will be prepared to address English language learning in the middle and secondary schools. As well, the degree prepares students to teach and be certified in Theatre, all grades.

EDTC: M.A. Educational Theatre in Colleges and Communities

The M.A. (EDTC) offers an innovative 36-point curriculum that prepares students to apply theatre within a range of community, educational, and college contexts. The program is designed for diverse and specialized interests in educational theatre activity. Candidates develop new strategies in teaching and learning through drama, and experiment in the creation and presentation of theatre for audiences of all ages. Students explore the skills required for teaching artistry and the role of educational theatre within an ever-changing global society. Graduates of this degree pursue teaching and administrative positions where certification is not required: private and community colleges, arts organizations, galleries and museums, educational outreach centers, behavioral health and prevention agencies, community and housing programs, youth and adult detainment centers, and theatre and arts agencies. The degree prepares students to teach educational theatre at the college level, and includes a strong research component, particularly beneficial for candidates interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in the future.

Students select a pathway based on their area of interest. These pathways include Applied Theatre, Drama Education, and Play Production for Artists and Educators. Students can also choose to create their own pathway under advisement.

The program offers numerous opportunities for students to participate in Study Abroad programs around the world. We continue to collaborate with artists and practitioners in Dublin, Ireland; London, England; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We also look forward to forging new partnerships in Israel and Mexico. Additionally, students are encouraged to pursue programming that furthers the dialogue with our colleagues on a global scale by pursuing a Practicum Abroad. Several students have traveled to Tanzania, Uganda, and China to complete their Culminating Experience. Students are also able to pursue 24 points of study abroad coursework for EDTC requirements by advisement.

Limited electives outside of the Program in Educational Theatre are permitted by advisement only. A written case must be made to your advisor, which outlines the relationship of the electives to the students' chosen pathway. Students must discuss their degree program with their advisor each semester, prior to registration. Note that there are prerequisites in acting and theatre history. Students who have not taken these prerequisite courses or their equivalent at the undergraduate level must register for them before completing the degree. This may increase the number of course requirements. Students must discuss their degree program with their advisor each semester, prior to registration. Not all courses are offered each semester. Check with your advisor regarding course availability throughout your program of study. Moreover, students may develop an Independent Study under the advisement of a faculty member to further specialize in their area of interest.

The flexibility of the EDTC program allows for an optional summers only course of study. This option is especially appropriate for candidates who may already be teaching in schools across the country and can only take classes during the summer semesters. We run four sessions of diverse courses throughout the summer, here at the Washington Square Campus, and students are also able to take advantage of the study abroad opportunities during summer semesters.

EDTC candidates are encouraged to apply to begin in the semester that makes the most sense for their own schedules. Many of our students work full-time in different capacities throughout the tri-state area and enjoy the flexibility of being able to start in the Fall, Spring, or Summer term. Application Deadlines for each semester are as follows: February 1st for Fall, November 1st for Spring, and February 1st for Summer.

The Program in Educational Theatre produces four or five shows per year, in the studio Black Box Theatre and the historic Provincetown Playhouse. Each production invites student audiences to participate in a workshop designed to encourage young people to connect to the themes in the play. Graduate students have the opportunity to plan these workshops and write the study guide that accompanies each play. They work as actors with a professional director or in a technical capacity with professional designers in these productions. We have an extensive network of internship opportunities so that students can work with theatres for young audiences or as teaching artists in schools. New York University is an exciting place to live in and study theatre, next door to Broadway and off-Broadway productions. The spirit of New York City is as strong as ever. I hope you can join us.

ETSS: MA Dual Certification Program in Educational Theatre, All Grades, and Social Studies, 7-12

We are thrilled to announce the latest offering to our suite of programs in educational theater. Social studies and theatre have a powerful alliance when learners are provided with the chance to explore a period of history, historical concepts, and historical debates through the use of drama-based frameworks. Given the growing student and applicant interest in a program combining social studies certification with theatre certification, we offer this innovative dual certification program, whose curriculum is built on the school’s already registered programs in Educational Theatre, All Grades, and Teaching Social Studies, 7-12.

The need for models of artistic expression that lead toward literate engagement with historical concepts and texts has never been greater than it is today. The concern that technologies such as film, television and the Internet are replacing basic reading, writing, and critical thinking skills can be addressed by providing opportunities for students to explore key ideas in primary source documents or historical texts through the use of interactive dramatic strategies. The dual certification program adheres to State Learning Standards for both theatre and social studies. Each of the competencies now necessary for teacher certification programs are met by the coursework, fieldwork, and student teaching requirements in both programs, as well as all the faculty and institutional requirements. If you are interested in investigating this exciting and innovative program further, please contact David Montgomery at dm635@nyu.edu.
