Jonathan Shmidt Chapman is the Associate Director of Artistic Programming at New Victory Theater and the Founding Artistic Director of Trusty Sidekick, New York, New York. In his role at the New Victory Theater, Jonathan manages New Victory LabWorks, an artist residency program designed to help spur the development of high-quality performing arts for young audiences through new work development, professional development, and advocacy. In addition to his role at The New Victory, Jonathan is the Founding Artistic Director of Trusty Sidekick Theater Company, dedicated to creating bold and original theater for kids and families. As a director, he has developed new work at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, La Jolla Playhouse, Cleveland PlayhouseSquare and Abrons Arts Center. Most recently, he directed the world premiere of The Boy at the Edge of Everything by Finegan Kruckemeyer in a co-production with Seattle Children’s Theater. Previously, Jonathan spent six years in the award-winning New Victory Education Department, overseeing the Education Partnership Program and re-imagining teacher resource guides for a digital platform. Prior to moving to New York, he actively worked in the arts education community in Boston, holding positions with the Boston Lyric Opera, The Theater Offensive, and Wheelock Family Theater. Jonathan currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at New York University’s Steinhardt Program in Educational Theatre, where he teaches coursework on Theater for Young Audiences.
