Human Subjects Review for Proposed Doctoral Research

All proposals which involve human contact must go through the university human subjects review committee. The form, as well as pertinent information, can be obtained directly from the website of the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP). Students must take the required tutorial on the human subjects page before they develop their proposals or conduct research. However, students should not submit their proposals for human subjects review until after the formal Proposal Review by the Department. The steps are as follows:

  1. Students visit the Human Subjects Page and take the required tutorial.
  2. Students submits 6 copies of the full proposal for Departmental Review only after securing the approval and signatures of the student's dissertation committee. Student should include the completed human subjects approval form in the appendix of their proposal as part of the departmental review.
  3. Once the proposal has passed the Departmental Review, the student then submits the required number of copies of the proposal to the Human Subjects Review Committee. The student should wait until receiving approval from the Department in written form. Any revisions required by the review should be incorporated into the proposal submitted the human subjects review committee.
  4. The NYU Human Subjects Committee may require some additional revisions in consultation with the student and the dissertation chair.
  5. Once the human subjects revisions have been addressed, the student then submits two copies of the final revision of the proposal to the School of Education Graduate Office.
