In the Semester of their Exam, they should obtain the necessary approval from the Graduate Office and notify John Gilbert, the Administrator of the Candidacy Exam for all Music Programs.
Important: All music students must pass doctoral theory exam and/or complete all conditions required as a result of an assessment of performance on the examination. This step is manditory in achieving eligibility for doctoral candidacy. This examination is given at the end of each academic year.
Students must prepare a bibliography representing knowledge and research relevant to their field of study to submit to their Program Director and Candidacy Coordinator during the first week of semester they intend to take the Candidacy Exam.
A portfolio consisting of your resume, and other items specific to your program is due at least one week prior to the scheduled oral examination.
If you are planning to take Candidacy, you should meet with your Program Director and begin your bibliography immediately. Generally it takes at least a year to develop a bibliography and read the works cited. You should also complete the doctoral theory examination by the end of your first academic year.
