Dance Education Graduate & Doctoral

Master of Arts

Our outstanding dance and dance education curriculum prepares graduates to be innovative leaders in dance education. Our Master of Arts degree program is designed with these areas of concentration:

Teaching K-12: For the in-service dance educator who wishes to enrich and expand dance and pedagogical skills and practice (36 credits).

Teaching K-12 + Teacher Certification: For the pre-service dance educator seeking provisional teacher certification for grades kindergarten through 12. Leads to eligibility for New York State certification as a Teacher of Dance, K-12 with reciprocity in numerous states (48 credits).

Teaching in Higher Education: For those who wish to teach dance in higher education settings or to prepare for doctoral study (36 credits).

Teaching in Higher Education and the Professions: ABT Ballet Pedagogy
Students intending to teach in private studios, conservatories, as teaching-artists and community outreach may select a concentration in ballet pedagogy with the American Ballet Theatre (36 credits).

Doctoral Studies

The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development was one of the first institutions in the United States to offer a doctorate in dance education. Graduates have attained leadership roles in higher education as professors, researchers, and administrators. Doctoral students acquire a thorough grounding in significant historical and current issues as well as new, developing paradigms in dance education. As they conceptualize their research ideas and interests, doctoral students are provided with methodologies through which they can develop proposals and complete dissertations that have been renowned for their excellence and pioneering approaches.

The Ph.D. concentrates on research and theoretical development; the Ed.D. focuses on research and the practical application of existing theories. The School of Education provides access to leaders in educational theory and applied research and offers promising scholars a broad array of forums, seminars, and workshops as well as research facilities and technologies (45 credits beyond the master's degree).

The Doctoral Program in Dance Education is highly selective and purposefully accepts no more than one or two new students each year. On occasion, the Doctoral Program does not accept new students in a given year which allows the greatest amount of individual attention for current doctoral students. This is such a year: there will not be any new doctoral admissions in Dance Education for fall 2006. However, it is fully expected that doctoral admissions will resume for fall 2007.
