Rigorous Study in Music and Liberal Arts with Ample Performance Opportunities

In this bachelor of music program, you'll complete rigorous academic studies in both music and liberal arts, working closely with our faculty of internationally recognized composers. You'll be actively involved in the performance of your works – in concerts and readings by NYU performance groups in residence, school performing ensembles, and chamber groups specially hired for specific composition concerts – and collaborate with performers, dancers, and actors at NYU and throughout New York City.

We also have Composition concentrations in Scoring for Film and Multimedia and Contemporary Production and Songwriting.

How You'll Learn

A Full Liberal Arts Education with Specialized Music Training
To complete this bachelor's degree, you'll take 128 points, or credits, of classes: 40 in liberal arts and 88 in music. You will complete a range of liberal arts core courses, as well as music core courses, and music specialization courses, working closely with renowned composition faculty. You'll learn how to use industry-standard music technology.

Performance and Networking Opportunities
As a student in our program, you will have multiple opportunities to have your concert works performed in concerts, residencies, and readings by NYU performance groups, such as the NYU Orchestra and NYU Percussion Ensemble. You'll collaborate with performers, dancers, and actors in NYU Steinhardt's Music Technology, Jazz Studies, and Instrumental and Vocal Performance programs, as well as with other New York City musicians and artists. You'll participate in our weekly Composers Forum, where you will meet and work with world-renowned composers and performers, prepare two student showcases per semester, and attend highlights in the New York City new music concert season.

Study Abroad
You'll have the unique opportunities to study music abroad at NYU Prague or NYU Paris, receiving specialized music training in music composition, music history and theory, music performance, and other related topics of study.

Dual Degree Option: BM Music Composition/MA Music Education

We also offer a dual degree that allows you to earn a bachelor of music in composition or performance and a master of arts in music education in only five years. You can take courses towards your graduate degree during your junior and senior years, then complete the MA in one additional year of study, becoming eligible for New York State initial certification as a teacher of music, grades K-12.
