Audition Dates and Portfolio/Audition Requirements for Undergraduates
This page is for undergraduates only.
Applicants to our master's and doctoral programs are not required to audition, but must submit a composition portfolio of original works as a part of the application process. For more details and instructions on submitting this portfolio, see the Application Guides for the master's program and the doctoral program.
The requirements are different for the Concentration in Contemporary Production and Songwriting.
First, apply for undergraduate study.
Undergraduate Audition Dates are shown in the table below.
Please note that transfer students are only accepted for the Fall semester.
Audition is required for undergraduate applicants. You will perform two pieces in contrasting styles on an instrument of your choice. One of these pieces may be a composition of your own, but at least one (and, if you prefer, both) of them must be a work by a composer other than yourself. Please note that accompanists are not required nor provided. Live auditions will include a short interview about your history as a composer and may include testing of music theory fundamentals. Students interested in the Film Scoring concentration can bring examples of their work with visual media. If you cannot make the audition please upload a video of your live performances.

Note for Prospective Transfer Students:
Though NYU's deadline for Spring transfer admission is November 1 and our deadline for Summer/Fall transfer admission is April 1, we suggest that you submit your Common Application one month in advance. Submitting your Common Application early will leave you more time to schedule an audition by our deadlines above.
SCHEDULE YOUR AUDITION online after you have applied.
Composition portfolio must contain three or four scores of original works in different instrumentation and style, accompanied by an audio recording of at least two of the works. Portfolio must be submitted online via GetAcceptd before the audition. If you cannot make the audition, please upload your performance video.
All materials must clearly indicate the applicant's name and NYU ID Number (if applicable), the program applied to, and the contents of the file.
