People - Music Business

Catherine Fitterman Radbill, Director of Undergraduate Music Business

EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND:
My experience in the music industry includes booking and promoting live events, entrepreneurship, artist management, strategic planning and fundraising, piano tuning and vocal accompaning. I have a Bachelor of Music degree in piano pedagogy and a Master of Arts degree in performing arts management.

Why I Decided to Work in the Music Industry:
I can't remember a time when I wasn't working in the music industry. Beginning with piano lessons in kindergarten, my musical studies continued through college. I supported myself by working as a church musician, accompanist and piano teacher. After a short stint as an apprentice piano tuner I began my studies in performing arts management. Jobs with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Columbia Artists Management Inc. led to a 13-year expedition to Colorado as a concert promoter and fundraiser. I founded the Entrepreneurship Center for Music at the University of Colorado at Boulder. My family graciously accompanied me to New York City in August, 2002, so I could begin my present job with NYU.

What I Like Most About Teaching:
Teaching is the hardest job I've ever had. My favorite times are those "ah, ha!" moments in class, when i can see that a student has just mastered a concept and gives us all a big smile of triumph.

Outside Interests:
I don't have any outside interests. If I ever retire I'll probably get a dog and a hobby.

Tips for Students:
Thank your parents for helping you become who you are by giving you roots and wings. Use them.

Favorite Music: Anything played on NPR.
