Doctoral Studies in Music
The Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, founded in 1925, was one of the first of its kind in the Northeast and the first to offer a doctorate in music education. After acquiring the New York College of Music in 1968, the department expanded to include music performance, music composition, and music therapy. Curricula were implemented that established these disciplines from undergraduate through the doctoral level. New York University was the first institution to offer a Ph.D. in music performance. It remains among the few institutions offering this degree. The program has distinguished itself by developing innovative research designs in this area. The Ph.D. concentrates on research and theoretical development as applied to students’ specializations. The Ed.D. focuses on action research and the implementation of existing theories, and the D.A. is a clinical research degree in music therapy that focuses on qualitative clinical studies.
Later, the department expanded music performance to include music theatre and opera studies, jazz studies, as well as the areas of music technology, film and media scoring, and music business to provide additional opportunities for study and research.
New York University is one of the premiere research universities in the world, and the Department provides a strong context of creativity and performance to ground research paradigms in substantive issues of music making and music education. As they conceptualize their own research ideas and interest, doctoral students explore concrete methodologies through which they can develop proposals and complete dissertations that have acquired an international reputation for their excellence and pioneering approaches.
